Call for Proposals - Taking on the Political - Edinburgh University Press:  The editors of the series, "Taking on the Political," have issued an open call for manuscript proposals.  Books in the "Taking on the Political" series:

    • are relatively short, ranging between 60,000 and 75,000 words;
    • draw primarily from Continental thought;
    • are not about the way a given thinker conceives the political, but about what can be done when using a particular approach or theorist(s) to think the political;
    • "take on" a theorist, debate or theme

Polemicization is the distinguishing trait of the series.  Manuscripts willing to run risks by venturing beyond the mainstream and interrogating commonplace truths are welcome. Click on the link above for details. (Submitted by Benjamin Arditi.)

Professional Associations

American Philosophical Association

American Political Science Association

American Society for Political and Legal Philosophy: "The American Society for Political and Legal Philosophy was founded in 1955 by a group of friends in the social sciences, law, and philosophy who shared an interest in a range of problems traditionally treated within the broad context of interdisciplinary exploration and discussion of those issues of political and legal philosophy that are of common interest to those fields. The society has two major activities: first, an annual meeting devoted to the discussion of one particular topic in political and legal philosophy, and second, the publication of a yearbook, Nomos, in which the results of the discussions are incorporated in a series of articles on the topic by members who have participated formally or informally in the discussions. " (from their website)

L'Association canadienne de philosophie / Canadian Philosophical Association: "The Canadian Philosophical Association was founded in 1958 to promote philosophical scholarship and education across Canada, and to represent the interests of the profession in public forums." (from their website)

Foundations of Political Theory: The very useful website for the APSA's Organized Section.  A great place to start if you want to find information about political theory and political theorists on the Internet.

International Conference for the Study of Political Thought (CSPT): "The International Conference for the Study of Political Thought (CSPT) is an international, interdisciplinary organization of scholars and informed citizens concerned to promote the study of past and present political thinking especially with respect to the proper ends of political activity and the means permissible for their attainment. International Association for the Study of European Ideas: "The Society and its journal, The European Legacy: Towards New Paradigms, seek to promote the study of Europe's cultural past and present. Special stress will be laid on the inventive and creative aspects of the European mind in science, religion, philosophy, art, literature, sociology, politics, history, economics and psychology. European ideas will be shown to be the outcome of over four centuries of a continual cultural exchange between European nations."

Public Administration Theory Network (PAT-net): The Public Administration Theory Network (PAT-Net) provides a unique forum to discuss ideas in public administration and policy. It is to some extent a counterbalance to mainstream theoretical approaches, including the economistic view of administrative reform....  The Network does not have a collective identity, but members do share in common the idea that public administration is as much about the social construction of society as it is about the administration of public services.  Amongst the membership, there is not only great concern for the means of administration, but also for the ends, i.e., the effect of public programs on people's lives. Those in the Network are also interested in how research is conducted in the discipline and what views of human nature and knowledge are embedded in a particular public administration theory.

Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy:  "SPEP is the Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy, a professional association devoted to supporting philosophy inspired by Continental European traditions.  SPEP is also actively committed to philosophical pluralism.  It is one of the largest American philosophical societies and accommodates such traditions as critical theory, existentialism, feminism, German Idealism, hermeneutics poststructuralism and phenomenology." (from the Palgrave Macmillan website)

Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy: "Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy accepts articles from any branch of social and political philosophy that are accessibly written and concerned with the overlap between theory and practice. [The journal] focuses on individual thinkers, particular social and political concepts, such as power, equality, sovereignty and liberty, and various schools of thought, such as republicanism, liberalism and nationalism. In each case, particular regard is paid to the practical policy implications of the theories or ideas concerned. It also covers the theoretical assumptions and implications of such policy issues and socio-political-legal processes as democratization, multiculturalism, environmental protection, development aid, European Union, judicial legislation, globalization and social stratification." (from the Routledge/Taylor & Francis website)

Disputatio: "Formerly a journal, Disputatio is now a book series that publishes interdisciplinary scholarship on the intellectual culture and intellectual history of the European Middle Ages. The Hedgehog Review: "The Hedgehog Review is an interdisciplinary, academic journal that explores the most pressing issues and questions of our day. One of the hallmarks of our time is the fragmentation of academic inquiry, where the specialization of scholarly pursuit leads to ways of thinking and speaking that are increasingly technical, insular, and self-confirming. Against these tendencies... [t]he journal brings together essays, interviews, bibliographies, and book reviews by scholars from throughout the humanities and social sciences. By focusing attention from many disciplines of study on one issue or question, the journal aims to be a unique resource for those concerned with making sense of the puzzles, perplexities, and promise of our time." (from their website)

History of Political Thought: "History of Political Thought is a quarterly journal which was launched in 1980 to fill a genuine academic need for a forum for work in this multi-disciplinary area.... The journal is devoted exclusively to the historical study of political ideas and associated methodological problems. The primary focus is on research papers, with extensive book reviews and bibliographic surveys also included." (from their website)

The IPT Beacon: "The IPT Beacon is an unusual journal in several respects. Its purely ethereal existence - with no printed paper directly involved - is the least of these.... More unusual is that this publication features work from other journals. In fact, for its first few issues there is a likelihood it will feature only work from other journals. For while submissions of original IPT articles are definitely encouraged, the IPT Beacon, unlike a more conventional journal, is not entirely dependent on submissions in order to fulfil its core aim. That aim, quite simply, is to showcase - in one place - the best current work in IPT, whatever its source.... [R]eaders can have ready access to articles of quality and significance at the cutting edge of International Political Theory. This brings us to one further respect in which this is an unusual journal, namely, that it is a journal of International Political Theory. Although numerous journals from several disciplines carry IPT articles, there is no other single journal dedicated entirely to work in this field." (from the introduction to the first issue)

Journal of Global Ethics: "The Journal of Global Ethics is an international and interdisciplinary scholarly journal concerned with ethical issues arising in the global context. The journal promotes the study of "global ethics", encouraging examination of the wide variety of ethical issues that arise in the context of globalisation and global relations. The journal provides a forum for the analysis of ethics and values and their relationship to globalisation, international relations, politics and development, engaging particularly in debates about global justice.... The [journal] draws chiefly on the disciplines of philosophy, political science, sociology, theology, economics and law and covers diverse topics such as human rights, international development, biomedical, economic and environmental issues." (from the Taylor & Francis website)

Journal of Moral Philosophy: "The Journal of Moral Philosophy is a peer reviewed journal of moral, political and legal philosophy with an international focus. It publishes articles in all areas of normative philosophy, including pure and applied ethics, as well as moral, legal, and political theory. Articles exploring non-Western traditions are also welcome. It seeks to promote lively discussions and debates for established academics and the wider community by publishing articles that avoid unnecessary jargon without sacrificing academic rigour. It encourages contributions from newer members of the philosophical community." (from the Sage Publications website)

The Journal of Political Philosophy: "The Journal of Political Philosophy is an international journal devoted to the study of theoretical issues arising out of moral, legal and political life. It welcomes, and hopes to foster, work cutting across a variety of disciplinary concerns, among them philosophy, sociology, history, economics and political science." [includes] the study of political institutions and practices, history, and literature.... Polis also publishes articles on the reception of ancient political thought....  The Society [aims] to draw together, and encourage collaboration between, those interested in Greek political thought whatever their specialism or approach." (from their website)

Political Theory:  "Political Theory publishes articles on political philosophy from every philosophical, ideological and methodological perspective. It offers essays in historical political thought, modern political theory, normative and analytical philosophy, and the history of ideas, as well as critical assessments of current work." (from the journal description on the Sage Publications website)

Politics and Ethics Review:  "A new peer-reviewed journal that publishes original normative, theoretical and applied research in politics and ethics, broadly construed. Focusing on the examination of matters of immediate relevance in today’s world, PER seeks to ... enrich contemporary debates and stimulate innovative new work in normative political thought.... Consequently, the journal has a particular interest in research that focuses upon the various forms of intersection or overlap between the political and the ethical." (from the journal description on the Edinburgh University Press website)
