Welcome To The History
Club
AT SUNY ONEONTA!
Established in1988, the History Club is one of the State
University of New York College
at Oneonta’s most active social-academic organizations. Throughout the year, the club sponsors a variety of
on-campus activities. Each activity has one goal:
creating a public space, beyond the classroom, where
students can discuss, debate and learn about significant
historical issues. Along these lines, the Club has
sponsored a number of public lectures; each lecture
brought students and faculty together to explore topics
ranging from a class analysis of the Beatles and their
music to the way corporations often influence –sometimes
shape– the foreign policy of the United States. The club
has organized a lecture series that will bring prominent
historians to campus to discuss the history of American
conservatism, the historical realities of the 1960s,
America’s wild-west gun-slinger mentality and the
evolving role of women in American society and culture.
The club also sponsors off-campus activities. Recently,
the club traveled to
Washington DC to enjoy the wide
variety of historical sites and museums in the city.
The club has also taken day trips to New York City and other
local sites of interest. In the future, the club plans
to organize a number of
weekend outings to other places, including the New York State Library and
Cultural Center in Albany, NY and a visit to the Erie
Canal Museum in Rome, NY.
In the fall of 2001, the History Club designed and
produced a club t-shirt. The t-shirt carries the Club’s
slogan –Carve Your Future Out
of the Past. Now in 2005, these t-shirts are
still around and are owned by almost all of the active
members of the History Club. Besides our active
members, history majors, secondary education majors and
members of the faculty have
purchased an official History Club T-Shirt. So as
you walk around campus, keep an eye out for the History
Club t-shirts. Perhaps you'd even like to buy one! All proceeds
from the sale of the t-shirts
go to support the Club’s activities. In the
past, these funds
have helped to establish a College at Oneonta chapter
of
Phi Alpha Theta
–the history honor society. Our chapter, Alpha Kappa
Iota, has been quite successful. The best of
history students have been honored with membership in
this organization.
Dr. Ashbaugh of the history department
is the faculty advisor for our chapter.
The History Club worked with members of the
History Department to establish an award in honor of a
history major–Michael Wright. The Michael Wright Book
Award is an annual award granted to a senior history
major. The award fund will also support the purchase of
history books and related material. This material will be
deposited in the James M. Milne Library in honor of
Michael Wright and in the name of the award
recipient. Students,
faculty and staff, from around the campus joined with
the History Club to honor Michael Wright’s memory by
contributing to this award fund. In response to the
number of innovative activities the club has organized
on and off the campus, one faculty member declared that
the History Club is “certainly one of the College’s most
dynamic and active organizations.”
The History Club’s E-Board, its growing number
of members, and its faculty advisors encourage History
Majors, Secondary Education Majors and students with an
interest in history to join the History Club. We
are seeking to increase our membership and also to
increase the activity of our current members. It
is our goal to organize more programs and have more
fundraisers to support more fun and exciting trips to
various locations across the country. If you want
more information on the History Club please see the

Dr. Beal, our faculty advisor.
