Special Events:

LFree Public Lecture and Discussion on the Holocaust:

March 19th, 7:00 pm

Morris Hall: Craven Lounge

                                SUNY College at Oneonta

By Dr. Barry Trachtenberg, SUNY Albany, Professor of Judaic Studies

Dr. Barry Trachtenberg (SUNY Albany) will discuss the development of the Algemeyne Entsiklopedia, a Yiddish-language encyclopedia that was begun in Berlin, Germany in the early 1930s, just as the Nazis came to power. The Nazi takeover of Germany and later of Europe forced the editors to emigrate to Paris and later to New York.
While the editors of the encyclopedia had first conceived of their project as a work that would edify its readers (primarily eastern European Jews), their mission changed in the 1940s as they became aware of the Holocaust. Thus, their efforts changed into a memorialization of European Jews and a record of their devastation.
