Democracy is not a spectator sport.  An election is decided by the people who show up.
For almost a century the League of Women Voters has worked to strengthen our democracy by helping citizens to learn about societal issues and to become engaged and participate in politics and elections.  Towards this end the two local League chapters in Otsego County, in the Oneonta and Cooperstown areas, invite the local community to attend a public Candidate Night, on Monday, October 17th in Morris Hall on the SUNY/Oneonta campus.

The evening will feature two debates.  The first will be between Jermain Bagnall-Graham and James Seward, candidates to be the New York State Senator for District #51.  The second will be between William Magee and John Salka, the candidates vying to represent District #121 in the New York State Assembly.

Questions to the candidates will come from the attending audience and from a panel drawn from our local news media.  To assure informative, respectful and fair debates, the debates will abide by League debate guidelines; these are posted online on LWVOneonta.org.

The evening will also include presentations by the two candidates seeking single available seat on Oneonta’s Town Council: Randal Mowers and Michael Stolzer
The full evening will be live-streamed online and recorded for later on-demand viewing, both available on LWVOneonta.org.

The sponsoring local Leagues thank all the candidates, SUNY/Oneonta and their Creative Media Services unit, and our many League volunteers for making this evening possible.

There is still time to register to vote, and to apply for an absentee ballot for the November elections.  To check your registration status, your voting Districts, or your polling places, or to pursue other voting matters, visit the website of your local County Board of Elections, or contact them directly.  In Otsego County the BOE website is http://www.otsegocounty.com/depts/boe/ ; email them at BOE@otsegocounty.com or call  547-4247 or 547-4325.
