Awards

Because excellence and achievement take many different forms, the Oneonta Undergraduate Philosophy Conference presents awards in the following categories.
President's Awards
President's Awards honor student presentations that most clearly exemplify the standards and ideals of the conference. Criteria include, but are not necessarily limited to:
- Philosophical Content (both quantity and quality),
- Exposition and Expression (especially the ability to present complex, difficult concepts in clear, distinct language),
- Insight, Creativity, and Originality, and
- Quality of Presentation (including interactions with discussants and others).
- An individualized certificate.
- A modest monetary award.
- Publication in the selected proceedings of the conference.
- Recipients' names are engraved on a brass plaque, displayed in perpetuity at SUNY Oneonta.
East-West Awards honor student presentations that exhibit special expertise and insight in Asian and Comparative Philosophy.
Recognition includes:
- An individualized certificate.
- A modest monetary award.
- Publication in the selected proceedings of the conference.
- Recipients' names are engraved on a brass plaque, displayed in perpetuity at SUNY Oneonta.
Spirit of Conference Awards honor students who contribute to the conference in diverse, sometimes unexpected ways. Special consideration is given to contributions that enhance the academic, intellectual, and positive social atmosphere of the conference.
Recognition includes:
- An individualized certificate.
- Recipients' names are engraved on a brass plaque, displayed in perpetuity at SUNY Oneonta.
Named in honor of an alumna who helped found the conference, Kerri Lynn Nicholas Heart and Soul Awards provide special recognition to those who have made truly exceptional, lasting contributions to the conference.
Recognition includes:
- An individualized certificate .
- Recipients' names are engraved on a brass plaque, displayed in perpetuity at SUNY Oneonta.
Matthew Grappone Prizes honor student presentations that exhibit special expertise and insight in the Philosophy of Science.
Recognition includes:
- An individualized certificate.
- A modest monetary award.
- Recipients' names are engraved on a brass plaque, displayed in perpetuity at SUNY Oneonta.
Dominick Roda Awards honor discussants who present exceptionally insightful, cogent, and thought-provoking analyses of other students’ papers.
Recognition includes:
- An individualized certificate.
- A modest monetary award.
- Recipients' names are engraved on a brass plaque, displayed in perpetuity at SUNY Oneonta.
David L. Hall Memorial Essay Prizes are awarded annually to enable exceptional undergraduate philosophy majors from Hawaii to participate in the SUNY Oneonta Undergraduate Philosophy Conference. David L. Hall was an internationally renowned philosopher whose interests brought American philosophy and the Chinese tradition together in conversation. His frequent collaborator Roger Ames and the Philosophy Department at the University of Hawaii established the award in Professor Hall’s memory following his premature death in the spring of 2001.
Publication in the Conference ProceedingsSelected student papers are published, along with the keynote addresses, Each year, Oneonta Philosophy Studies publishes a prestigious volume that includes:
