Dr. French sees how far the tubing will stretch. We needed to figure out how to crank the basket back and also how to release it. Eventually, we decided on a come-a-long to crank back the basket. We attached the come-a-long to the basket using a heavy duty length of chain. Then we decided to use a chain cutter to release the basket from the come-a-long, this being a method that wasted little energy. (That long black thing in the bottom of the picture is the tail of Dr. French's cat. She was quite helpful to us.)
